In Memory

Kathy Kosik

Kathy Kosik died on June 16, 1979 after a short illness. Her cause of death was unknown for some time, but later found to be Toxic Shock Syndrome. Kathy was in the top 10% of our class and had plans to become a Physical Therapist. She had been awarded a scholarship, but the letter came after she passed away. Kathy had a love for life and a wonderful caring heart.

Kathy and I were connected at the hip from the time I walked into the 6th grade classroom at Martin Park Elementary as the “new kid”. The teacher sat me next to Kathy and from that moment on, we were best friends.
Kathy was so much fun to be around and had this wonderful infectious laugh. We laughed a lot, and we cried some too. She was unselfish and caring, and always stood up for her friends no matter what.
We did all the best friend stuff like trading clothes, getting our ears pierced, trying new hairstyles, double dating, learning to drive, keeping secrets…we used to pinky swear and say “to the grave” meaning we would never tell each other’s secrets.
Kathy had such a crazy side to her (funny crazy). For instance…I was spending the night at her house one night and we got a phone call from some boys (if you read this you will probably remember who you are). They asked us to meet them outside. We walked out and a few minutes later, a car came by with two shiny butts hanging out of the windows on the passenger side! We screamed and went running back into the house! We knew they would be back, so we ran to the fridge and grabbed as many eggs as we could hold. We were armed and ready for combat. When they drove back around, we fired eggs at those behinds so fast they didn’t know what hit them! Then we laid on the ground and laughed so hard our sides hurt.
I could write forever about Kathy. I have so many wonderful memories of her. Not a day goes by that I don’t think of her. She is my forever friend.

Janet - What a wonderful tribute to your friend. I think of her often and am glad she is being remembered on our class website. It's been a long time coming. Looking forward to seeing you.

I saw two girls that looked to be about 12 yesterday. They were riding their bikes. One was brunette, the other blonde. They reminded me of Kathy and me. We rode all over Martin Park on our bikes. We'd stop and rest at the end of Carl Rd. in that empty lot. We solved all the world's problems on a weekly basis. It was great!
