Sandy Attinello (Austin)

AUSTIN SANDRA RUTH AUSTIN On December 17, 2007. Born in Washington, DC on January 19, 1951 to John and Ruth Attinello, Sandra Ruth Austin graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School. She earned a B.A. in Economics from GWU followed by a Masters in City Planning from Harvard University. Married in 1972 to Ken Austin, she worked at the Franklin Institute and for the Navy Facilities Command, until the birth of their daughter, Anne, in 1976. Sandy became a resident of Burke, VA in 1979 and worked at home and as a planner for the City of Fairfax. Combining her training in design, love of photography, and passion for plants, Sandy became an instructor in design and Director of the Landscape Design Program at GWU. She established a landscape design business and continued her affiliation with the university as a curriculum development consultant for landscape design and horticulture programs. Sandy made an extensive study of scientific theories of color for her ground-breaking first book, Color in Garden Design, in 1998. She later began work on a companion book, A Field Guide to Color in the Garden, left uncompleted at her death. With the passing of her father in 2000, she became a primary caregiver for her mother. After four years of treatment, Sandy succumbed to cancer on December 17, 2007 and was inurned at Arlington National Cemetery on April 25, 2008. She is survived by her mother Ruth; husband Ken; daughter Anne and son-in-law Colin; her sister Lauren, brother John and their families, and her brother Paul.
