Sister Marjorie R. “Margie” Monahan, 66, of the Carmelite Community of the Word, died Saturday at Conemaugh Memorial Med­ical Center, Johnstown.

She was born in Altoona, daughter of the late Martin and June Monahan.

Surviving are members of the Carmelite Community of the Word; many friends; and four brothers: Donald Eugene Monahan of Houtz­dale, Jeffrey Monahan of Linden, Iowa, Clyde Monahan of Hollidaysburg and David Monahan of Cresson.

She was preceded in death by her community sisters: Sister Mary Gainino, C.C.W., in 2003, and Sister Mary Ann Palko, C.C.W., in 2016.

Sister Margie entered religious life on Jan. 1, 1979, with the Carmelite Community of the Word and made her final profession of vows on Aug. 10, 1986. She began her ministries as a worker in the dietary department of Garvey Manor Nursing Home, Hollidays­burg, and served as chaplain at Laurel Crest Manor, Ebensburg, before moving on to serve the Fulton County Catholic Mission in McConnellsburg for 29 years.

Friends will be received from 2 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2018, at St. Stephen Roman Catholic Church, McConnellsburg, followed by a memorial service. Friends will also be received from 2 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, 2018, at Carmelite Community Motherhouse, Incarnation Center, 394 Bem Road, Gallitzin, where a vigil prayer service will be held. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 12, 2018, at the Basilica of St. Michael the Archangel, Loretto, the Rev. Father John D. Byrnes, V.F., celebrant. Committal will be at Holy Name Cemetery, Eben­sburg. Arrangements are by Askew-Houser Funeral Homes Inc., Ebensburg.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Sister Margie’s memory may be made to Fulton County Catholic Mission, 110 S. Third St., McConnellsburg, PA 17233, or to Carmelite Community of the Word, 394 Bem Road, Gallitzin, PA 16641.
