I was saddened to hear of the passing of John ("Jake") Rusling.  He and I were good friends in the mid-'60s.  I remember Jake as a great sports fan, particularly of Navy sports.  We spent many hours with other guys around our age going to baseball and basketball games, even wrestling matches, at the Naval Academy.  But Jake's real love was Navy football.  One December ('65 I think it was, but it could have been '66) we took the train to Philadelphia to see the Army-Navy game.  Navy won, and the train ride back to Baltimore was uproarious, with many officers, alumnae and midshipmen several sheets to the wind.  We were too young for drinking but got caught up in the raucous spirit.  We were fans not only of Navy but of football in general, and wanted to know how the other games had gone that Saturday.  Someone had a radio at the far end of the train car and we kept yelling, "What's the score of the Dame game?"  This became a joke between Jake and me.

Much later I ran into him at a class reunion and learned that he had commuted for ten years to the town that I then lived in (Vienna, VA) but had never crossed paths there.  We talked about going to a Navy game together for old time's sake.  We had the same conversation at a subsequent reunion, but alas it never happened.  Jake old buddy, you'll be missed.
