John David was one of my best male friends all through junior high and high school. We grew up in the same neighborhood and often walked to and from Coles Jr. High together for three years. He always made me smile and even when he made me mad (like the time he threw-up on me on the ferris wheel at Camden Park), he was always able to make me laugh about it later. I'll never forget you John David!!!!

David sat behind me in several classes. He was the one who noticed my first bra and brought it to the whole junior high school social studies classes attention when he snapped it and it broke! He and I joked alot, really have alot of fun memories about him.

John David and I used to ride to football together. He was driving many months before me. One day he "ran down" a bunch of birds that were in the road while we were in that ugly yellow Chevette. We had done this before and had never hit any of the birds... he would just laugh and laugh. Well, this one time, we hit one of the birds and broke its wing. He was so upset!! We never did that again.

We also roomed together one year at football camp. What a great guy! Full of life! He would do anything for his friends! There was no way I could ever outwork him either!

I remember another time I spent the night at his house. Me and about 12 other guys - I think it was a baseball team. Anyway, he "got me" to try to "dip". I tried it - got sooo sick that night!!! Never did that again! Again, he just laughed and laughed... I couldn't get mad!

David was a leader. A jokster, sure. Not sure I always agreed with where he wanted to lead sometimes :), but he was a leader.

I remember David most from Coles and the thing I remember most was that he was always nice to Buddy Sexton. When so many kids ignored Buddy or gave Buddy a hard time, David would always talk to him and make him feel special. They joked. They laughed. He let Buddy make fun of his silver tooth. Other people noticed this and I think it made a difference in how others looked at Buddy. I know it made a difference in how I looked at David.

David Johnson to me was always larger than life.  He was such a fun loving guy and had a big heart.  Whenever I think of John David I think of his smile.  He knew I was very shy but he still never hesitated to talk to me.  In fact sometimes he just made me talk to him.  I remember talking to him a lot my senior year in Herbie Conley's office. :)

That silver tooth that he had. The huge smile. We played on the same little league  team (jets) when we were eight. We stood in the outfield, and he would tell jokes, and make me laugh the whole time.  One time when we were in jr high, in the summer, he, Barry Scott and I rode our bikes down to the bridge on the river. He was determined that he was going to climb up in those girders and look for pigeon eggs. We finally talked him out of it, but i'm sure he would have tried it if we hadn't.

I will tell you the punch line to one of the jokes that he told me every practice. In the groove, in the groove.  Still makes me smile.
