Georgia Keck (Witherspoon)

Georgia Keck Witherspoon - Greenville, South Carolina

Georgia was born March 16, 1945 in Chicago, Illinois to George and Harriet Clausen Keck. At Menlo-Atherton, Georgia was a member of the Sophomore Board, Junior Board, Board of Welfare and School Spirit Board. At our Senior Ball in January 1962, Georgia was a beautiful attendant to the Senior Ball Queen. Georgia and her husband attended our class reunion in 2012 -- Georgia as seen here in reunion photos with Sue Teige, Linda Shuck and Teppie Brown.

Georgia lived in Greenville, South Carolina where died suddenly at home on March 17, the day after her 69th birthday of a heart attack. An Army wife for 29 years beginning  after her marriage in 1966, she made significant contributions to the welfare of soldiers, Army civilians and their families in assignments from 15 locations from Australia to Saudi Arabia. Georgia received the Commanders Award for Public Service from the US Army Chief of Engineers in 1995. At every military assignment and after the Army in New Orleans and Greenville, she made close friends and was continually involved as an active participant in organizations that provided support to needy or health-challenged people.

A graduate of Stephens College in Fine Arts and Arizona State University in Art Education, Georgia used her artistic talent to decorate many Army quarters and other homes in the US and abroad. Her peers continually called on her for advice when they faced similar challenges.

Georgia's closest surviving relatives are her husband of 48 years, Brigadier General (ret) Eugene S. Witherspoon, her sister, Leslie Herzog (John), of Colorado Springs, CO, a first cousin, Frank Crane (Terry), of Doylestown, PA, and brother-in-law, John Knox Witherspoon (Heather) of Hilton Head, SC.

Not blessed with children of her own, Georgia lavished attention and love on nieces, nephews, cousins and their children on both sides of the family. They include Katie Eck (Dave), Peter Herzog (Melodi), Dana Jussuame (Jay), Cathy Muir (Brock), Cori Crane, Nicki Koolmes (Kael), Michele Ferris (Jim), David Witherspoon (Tori) and Jennifer Witherspoon and all of their children.

At her wish, Georgia was cremated and her ashes buried at West Point, NY, one of her many Army postings.

I wouls like to offer my condolences to Georgia's husband and all her family.  It is heartwarming to learn how she led her life in the support of our military and their families.  I believe she must have touched many lives with her goodness.  Who could ask for more?  She was certainly a lovely girl in school and I wish I could have known her better later in our lives.  Sincerely, Jeannie Buscaglia
