What have you been up to since you left high school?

Since MA graduation I attended UC Berkeley, later completed a BA atAntioch University in San Francisco and an MA from Atlantic University in Virginia.
I've also written 12 books; the Born in Berkeley series; the mystery, A Valley of Ashes, a book on women's spirituality, Edgar Cayce and the Eternal Feminine. In 2006 I wrote a book for the Arcadia Images of America series: Alviso, San Jose;, and last year a novel set there; The Last Piano Bar, which challenges "ageism" with a group of singers from baby boomers in a setting where one commentator remarked: "people were singing and dancing and joyfully romancing, well into their 90s and beyond..."
As the parent of both a gifted and an autistic daugter, I have written articles including: "Vanessa: Sojourn with an Autistic Child," and with my late husband Joseph Haddox, worked to start community group homes in the 80s and advocate for those without a voice.
These mornings I get up quite early and go to her new group home to help her stay mobile. She plans to be "Miss Piggy" for Halloween.
I am partial to orange cats, and enjoyed the vigorous dance opportunities at our 5oth.

Tell your M-A or School Story

I remember rolling up my warm long pants on colder days at MA because a girl could get suspended for that infraction. By now I realized the rules were different for girls. I'd learned that as Menlo Oaks' Valedictorian, (with caveats: a girl couldn't exactly be president in those days so I came under director of girls athletics as I had a letter for Captain of the Basketball team.) At MA I thought of going our for sports, an older girl said then you would be a d----.
I didn't know what that was but gave up on being mainstream and went over to Palo Alto to raise money with Quaker kids for Civil Rights voter registration. Later I started going to stay with an older girl friend who lived in Berkeley. We worked on the Anti-Vietnam Day Committee.
And all because I had to roll up my pants at MA. Must have been fate.

Have sheltered in this last year, painting expressionist portraits like Rosa Parks, Freida Kahlo and Jean Cocteau here, teaching a Tuesday morning zoom Creative Memoirs class. that has helped me note some early events like attending James Flood School, Menlo Oaks, Menlo Aterton and even the progressive Pacific High for awhile. the trick with memoir is to suspend the inner critic at first and write what first flows out using all your senses.

Hoping for a safer, more convivial year for all. Sheltered in I’ve had time to paint. Working on a painting of musician James Taylor a distant relative in my father’s line. Avery Rogers managed the US Geological Survey on Middlefield and springs from Avery colonists.

How are you all doing sheltering in place? Time to reflect on other times of change we experienced coming of age. The best part of that for me was the creative aspect; since then creative writing, art and music have often been part of my purpose. How about you? lynnrogersma@yahoo.com 408 5595995

This month of Halloween inspired me to sing Love Potion Number Nine this year. Remember the song, already a “golden oldie”for us then I guess...
