In Memory

Bill Marcus

William Lightner Marcus Born in San Francisco in 1949, the son of Gerald D. Marcus and the late Eleanore Hyman Marcus died unexpectedly of heart failure at his home in Canoga Park, CA, on December 5, 2007. He was 58. A pioneer in the field of pharmacy law, Bill was a deputy attorney general with the California Department of Justice for 25 years, and, with Marsha Cohen, the author of the leading text in his field, "Pharmacy Law for California Pharmacists." He lived a life of passionate intelligence, a quality he applied to politics, books, baseball, and especially theatre in which he excelled as an award-winning actor prior to entering the field of law. He would go to any lengths to support a family member in times of need or triumph and above all took enormous pride in his two sons, Berek and Benjamin, as anyone who met him knew within five minutes. Theatre was his passion, law was his calling, but his children were the great love of his life. In addition to his father and sons, Bill is survived by his wife, Sophie Rosenberg of North Edwards; sister, Anne Vronski; three brothers, Daniel, Steven and Greil and by a vast community of friends, colleagues, and family made much smaller by the loss of his giant soul. Contributions may be made to the William L. Marcus Scholarship in Pharmacy Ethics & Law, through Williams Ettouati of the University of California, San Diego, 9500 Gilman Dr., La Jolla, CA 92093.

When I was teaching law at Southwestern College in San Diego County, Bill graciously agreed to come speak to my students in 2005.  He was so well versed on the subject of the legal aspects of pharmaceuticals and my students were fascinated. He was incredibly generous sharing his time and knowledge with the students. I very much appreciated his humor as well as his stories.
