Frances Graceffo DeFurio Brancato August 25, 2010 Frances Brancato, 89, of Auburn, died Wednesday. Frances taught chemistry and physics at West High, retiring as the science education coordinator. Survivors: daughter, Nancy (William) Barth; son, Carl (Kathy) DeFurio; stepchildren, Anne (Francis) DeVoe, Margaret (Joseph) Saya, Donna (Dino) Smorto, Anthony Brancato; sisters, Mary Graceffo and Susan Shaw; brothers, James Graceffo and Dr. Samuel (Judith) Graceffo; grandchildren, Michael Jr., Chris and Kelly Kulis, and Mark, Lori, Michael and Alexis DeFurio; stepgrandchildren, Jen and Chris Barth and Matthew (Noelle) Barth; and six great-grandchildren. Predeceased by husbands Carl DeFurio and Dominck Brancato; a sister, Sylvia Graceffo; two brothers, Peter and Dr. Joseph Graceffo. Services are 11 a.m. Monday in St. Francis Church. Calling hours are Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Pettigrass Funeral Home, 196 Genesee St., Auburn. Contributions to St. Francis Church.

Mrs. Brancato was one of those teachers who impacted me & changed my life for the better. I don't know why, but she liked me & took the extra time to make sure I understood the subject at hand. In my case it was chemistry. She wrote a very glowing letter of recommendation for me when I was applying to college. I sincerely believe that it was on the merit of that letter that I was accepted. I wish I could travel back in time & thank her for what she did for me & for what she meant to me. Not many people affect you the way a teacher can. She was one of the very best. From the bottom of my heart, thank you Mrs. Brancato.
