Andrea Mascarenas was a sweet kid who cared about her friends and took time to listen to their problems. That's how some of her classmates at Rangeview High School remembered the 16-year-old sophomore who died Tuesday of bacterial meningitis. ``She always cared about what you thought,'' said 14-year-old Adriane Craine, who met Andrea when they were students at Columbia Middle School.

Friends and relatives buried a Rangeview High School student killed by bacterial meningitis, but they said Andrea Mascarenas was one of those special spirits who never leaves.

``It wasn't like we had to make up good stories about her,'' Nicole Seraile, 15, said after the service Friday at Fort Logan National Cemetery.

Andrea, a 16-year-old sophomore who dreamed of a career in the Air Force or Navy, died Tuesday of bacterial meningitis, a day after she was taken to Columbia Medical Center of Aurora North by her parents.
