Judy Gay Thomas* - Class Of 1970

Judy G. Thomas, of Beckley and Elkview, passed away March 1, 2009, in Charleston, after a short, courageous battle with cancer. She was born Nov. 20, 1952, at Beckley, the daughter of the late Orville F. and Chrystal Albert Thomas. Judy had been a teacher at Park Jr. High and was currently serving as Principal of Beckley/Stratton Middle School. She had 31 years of service to Raleigh County Schools. Judy attended schools in Raleigh County (1970 graduate of WWHS) and earned degrees from WVU and Marshall University. She was very active in sports while in school and was volleyball coach for WVU. Judy served in coaching positions in Gilmer County, WWHS, and Anchorage Christian School. Left to mourn her loss are sisters: Tammy (Robert) Handley of Mount Hope and Patty (Doug) Miser of Vienna, W.Va.; brothers: Larry (Loretta) Hall of Anchorage, Alaska, Roger (Karen) Thomas and Rick Thomas of Beckley and Charles Thomas of Franklin, Ohio, and good friend, Barbara Hall. She leaves 13 nieces and nephews, whom she adored, and a host of aunts, uncles and cousins. She also leaves her students and staff of Beckley/Stratton whom she loved and they loved her in return. A celebration of Judy’s life will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 4, 2009, at Maxwell Hill Baptist Church, 301 Teel Road, Beckley, W.Va., with the Rev. Joe Ferguson officiating. Friends will be received by the family 3 to 9 p.m. today, Tuesday, at the church and one hour prior to the services. In lieu of flowers, donations will be accepted for a scholarship in Judy’s name through Beckley Area Foundation. This scholarship will be available to students of Beckley/Stratton who plan to attend WVU, the school Judy loved. Committal services and burial will follow at Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens at Cross Lanes, W.Va., at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.
