MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Thomas Haynes Hurst, Sr., age 56, of Murfreesboro, died on April 28, 2011, at Centennial Medical Center following a long, hard-fought battle with cancer. Born May 10, 1954, in Beckley, WV, he was the son of Jo Ann Haynes Hurst and the late William A. "Bill" Hurst, Sr. Mr. Hurst spent his childhood years in Beckley and attended Woodrow Wilson High School, where he was a very popular member of the Slimy Crew of '72. He entered the U.S. Army, served in the 101st Airborne division, and completed his tour in Stuttgart, Germany. After service, he moved to Nashville and raised a family. He worked at Bridgestone Tire and Nashville Gas. He was an avid sports fan, enjoyed playing poker, loved boating, and spoiling his grandkids. Survivors include his mother, Jo Ann Haynes Hurst. Two daughters: Toni Hurst Truett, Angela Hurst Casey and husband Jerry; and one son, Thomas (T.J.) Haynes Hurst Jr.; three grandchildren, Alexandra Grace Kimbrough, Avery McKenna Casey, and Garrett Thomas Truett, all of Murfreesboro. One brother, William A. "Bill" Hurst Jr., one sister, Sue Ann Hurst Baber and husband Roddy; two nephews: William Casey Baber and Christopher Thomas Kelly Baber, all of Beckley, WV; along with several aunts, uncles, and cousins with whom he was very close and his significant other Jeanne Elam, of Las Vegas, NV. In recent years, Mr. Hurst was able to meet and form a very special bond with his bone marrow donor, Cathy Walker, and her family, whose selfless contribution gave him 3 additional years of life. Service will be at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 1, 2011, at Jennings and Ayers Funeral Home, Murfreesboro, with Rev. Bill Adcock officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Murfreesboro. Visitation was from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday at Jennings and Ayers, and will be one hour before the service on Sunday. Pallbearers will be Thomas Haynes Hurst Jr., Roddy Baber, Casey Baber, Chris Baber, Jerry Casey, Joey Jacobs and Brian Truett. Mr. Hurst was an avid supporter of The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Each year he took such pride in his Light the Night Walk Team - Team Haynes - to raise money and awareness for a cure.
