In Memory

Larry Ciccarelli* - Class Of 1973

On Monday afternoon, during the quiet hours, of March 7th, 2011, an angel came by and took our beloved brother, uncle and friend, Larry Ciccarelli, to Heaven to be with his Savior and family that have gone on before him. Larry died peacefully at the Bowers Hospice House. Christened Larry Franklin Ciccarelli, Larry was born on May 23, 1955, in Beckley. The second of two children, his parents were the late Lawrence Benjamin and Mary Elizabeth Hansford Ciccarelli. Larry was 55 years of age. In addition to his loving parents, his paternal grandparents, Benjamin and Florence Ciccarelli, his maternal grandmother, Rose Marx, and his favorite aunt and uncle, Elsie Brown and Jack Ciccarelli, have preceded him in death. Larry’s childhood was spent on Northwestern Avenue, a place where he loved growing up. Until the final days of his life he loved to reminisce about his childhood and all his friends from the McLean Addition neighborhood. They were some of his fondest memories. The Ciccarelli family worshiped at St. Francis de Sales Parish where Larry sang in the choir. A graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, Class of 1973, he furthered his education at his father’s alma mater, West Virginia University, where he graduated in 1977 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Management and Marketing. And was he ever the greatest WVU fan! Active with WVU Alumni Association, Larry could always be seen at the 50-yard line at home games. He loved meeting family and friends at the games; he was immensely proud his two nieces chose WVU. Larry even enjoyed driving back to Beckley to watch the post-game show. He was a true “Mountaineer.” The past manager and part owner of Cooke-Wilson Electrical Supply Company, in later years Larry was a department manager at Tamarack. Larry Ciccarelli loved people. He had a passion for helping those in need and the less fortunate. This led him to become involved with Storm Haven Inc., a community-based transitional facility here in Raleigh County for recovering addicts. He served on their board of directors. Larry had a zest for life. The simple things, movies and Starbucks with his best buddies, Nancy Tieche and Sharon Muncy, could make his day. He simply enjoyed living. So much, that when he was diagnosed with cancer he chose living over dying. Larry enjoyed every day he was given. Just nine days before his passing, he went on a “Bucket List Trip,” traveling to Lago Mar Resort, the favorite beach destination of the Ciccarelli family, with his sister, Debbie. He wanted to see the sunset at Key West and he did. “Everybody dies but not everybody lives.” Larry Ciccarelli chose to live and cherish every minute. Left to cherish his memory are his sister, Deborah Lewis, and the brother he never had, Michael Haynes; he was “Uncle Larry” to Kati Fitzwater and her husband, Carl, of Charleston and Adrianne Lewis and her fiancé, Justin Bond, of Cincinnati, Ohio; he was the dear great-uncle to Drew and Ben Fitzwater, who loved coming to visit their uncle. Larry was blessed with a large extended family. Among them are his cousins, Sharon Faunce and her children, Stephen and Rachael; his Aunt Carmella Holman and her children, Elizabeth and Jacqueline Bevard; his faithful caregivers, whom he loved dearly, Phyllis Daniel and Jay Arnold. On Saturday, March 19th, at 11 a.m., Larry will return to his beloved St. Francis de Sales Church. The Monsignor Samuel Sacus will celebrate the Funeral Liturgy. The Rite of Committal will follow in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery at the Sunset Park where Larry will be laid to rest near his parents. “Oh Glad Reunion.” Don Stacy, Alan Larrick, Robert Tipane, Rick Wisman, Justin Bond, Carl Fitzwater, Stephen Faunce, and Michael Haynes will carry Larry to his final resting place. The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Melton Mortuary Chapel. At 8 p.m., Sr. Janice Rospert, a dear friend to the Ciccarelli family, will conduct the Vigil Prayer Service. The family suggests donations of sympathy can be made to Storm Haven Inc., PO Box 130, Raleigh, WV 25911, or the Bowers Hospice House, PO Box 1472, Beckley, WV 25802. And so Larry Ciccarelli was blessed. Family, friends, and, as his father, “Chick,” would always say, “For the good times.” God was good, even until the very end. Condolences may be sent to the family’s guestbook at www.meltonmortuary.com. Arrangements by Melton Mortuary Inc., Beckley.
