In Memory

Roy Thomas Elkin* - Class Of 1977

Roy Thomas Elkin III “Tommy”, age 61, of Beckley, WV passed away Thursday, December 31, 2020 in the hospital following an acute illness. His loss was unexpected, and the family is shocked and deeply saddened.

Tommy was preceded in death by his parents Peggy Elkin Hughes and Roy T. “Tom” Elkin Jr., and stepfather Ronnie Hughes. Loved ones left to cherish his memory include his three daughters; Misty Pack, Kimberly (Brian) Gore, and Tara (Travis) McDaniel; sister Nancy (Dave) Sotak; grandchildren Isiaah Evans, Taylor McDaniel, Collin McDaniel, Ethan Pack, Maddex Sims, Isabella Gore, and Abigail Gore (AKA his punks and bums); as well as his nieces, nephews, and extended family; and his cherished little buddy Koda, that never left his side.

Tommy was born on July 8th, 1959. He was a Flying Eagle graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, Class of 1977, where he made lifelong friendships playing basketball, baseball, tennis, and running cross country.

Shortly after high school, Tommy worked the family business, Elkin Distributors (Tom’s Toasted Peanuts) for many years. He later worked selling mining equipment for Fairchild, Powell Construction and Southern Mine Services.

Tommy was full of life and enjoyed bowling and playing golf in his spare time. He was a river rat at heart. Summers were always spent at his camp on the Greenbrier River where he loved fishing, boating, and listening to his favorite music around the campfire with his family and friends. This place will serve as his legacy and final resting place.

Anyone who knew Tommy, knew that he loved from his soul and believed in the value of family. His sister, daughters, and grandkids meant more to him than anything else in the world. He was unendingly proud of his grandchildren as proven by attending their sporting events, chauffeuring them to practices, and babysitting whenever asked. He was our rock, our protector, and a true tower of strength until the end.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests you take the time to skip a rock or cast a line in remembrance of our beloved father.

There will be visitation on Saturday, January 9th from 1:00-3:00 at Melton Mortuary and Cremation Center. Honoring his wishes, a celebration of life will be held at his camp on the Greenbrier River at a later date with close friends and family.
