Grady Amar*

William Grady Amar, 53, of Beckley, was born April 26, 1960, departed this life June 15, 2013, following a short battle with cancer. Grady was born in Fort Dix, N.J., the first African American and first male born in that hospital, to Samuel N. Amar and the late Louella O. Saunders-Amar. Grady was a 1978 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School where he was an avid member of track and field and baseball. Grady attended Beckley College majoring in drafting before going into the U.S. Army. After serving in the U.S. Army, he relocated to Detroit, Mich., where he worked as a Draftsman and Surveyor. He returned to West Virginia where he worked as a mine surveyor for Alpha Natural Resources. Some of his enjoyments and hobbies included baseball, hanging out with friends, listening to music, making CDs, and dancing. Grady leaves to cherish his memory his father, Samuel N. Amar; former wife, Rosalind (Franks) Amar; adopted daughter, India Hutcherson; sisters, Sharon Abrams, Carolyn “Schotzie” Amar; brother, Bernard Amar; nieces, Leteshia Abrams, Kenyata Amar; great-niece, Keyleauna Amar; special brothers, Lucas Snead, Robert Saunders, Ron Hickman, and Herbert Simpson; special sisters, Tina Donald, Connie Scott, Sandra Gray, Marlene Saunders, Caroline English, and Lillie Moore; a special niece, Hyedia Saunders; special friend, Rosetta Simpson, and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, and his “whole Detroit family.” Special thanks to Carlton Cunningham. Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 22, 2013, at St. Paul Baptist Church, 129 Rice St., Beckley. Rev. Walter Leach will officiate. Friends may meet one hour prior to services. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley. American Legion Post 32 will perform military rites. The family will receive visitors at 103 Grant St., Beckley. We would like to thank Raleigh Regional Cancer Center, WVU, and Hospice of Southern West Virginia. Words cannot express the thanks we give Rocky for the care of our brother and her husband. Leola Robinson (Bateman) (1978)

A funny guy, who will be greatly missed.  I will keep Shotzie and the family in my prayers.
