Randy Reid* - Class Of 1974

Randall Ray Reid, “Doc,” age 54, of Clear Creek, died on Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2011, after a sudden illness. He was the only child of Lil Williams Reid Houck and the late James Floyd Reid. Randall’s paternal and maternal grandparents, Leonard and Josie Reid, and Rufus and Dana Williams, all of Mabscott, have preceded him in death. Born on October 12, 1956, in Wyandotte, Mich., Randy grew up in Mabscott and graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School Class of 1974. Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Lil and Don Houck of Beckley; his wife of 35 years, Kathy Fraley Reid; daughter, Miranda Rae Reid Guzman and husband, Jon, of Columbus, Ohio; sons, James Dariel Reid and wife, Tabitha, of Princeton, and Jonathan Randall Reid of Glenville; his stepbrother, Thomas Houck of Temple, Texas; his aunts, Dorothy Lilly and Leila Reid; brothers-in-law, Bob Fraley and wife, Angel, of Clear Creek, and Randy Fraley of San Diego, Calif.; sisters-in-law, Juanita Adamson and husband, Rick, of West Salem, Ohio, and Sharon Bailey and husband, Sammy, of Toney’s Fork; and a host of nieces and nephews, among them a special niece, Lacey Fraley. Randall’s favorite pastime was spending time with his family, especially his three grandsons, Enrique, J.C. and Sebastian Guzman. He also enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting and just being outside. Randall began working for Raleigh Ready Mix the day after he graduated high school. While employed there, he was part of the crew that helped pour concrete forms for New River Gorge Bridge, sometimes working 36-hour shifts. Randall began his coal mining career in 1976 with Industrial Associates where he helped build mine silos in Mt. Storm, W.Va. and Grundy Va. He began working inside the coal mines as a roof bolter at Harris Operations in 1977, Eastern/Peabody. Randy worked at Elk Run (White Knight) for nine years. He was a member of UMWA Local 1607. Randall was well known as a hard worker who never complained about anything. He attended the Clear Creek Presbyterian Church. Funeral services will be Sunday, Oct. 9, at 11 a.m. at the Clear Creek Presbyterian Church. Randall will then be laid to rest in the Calfee Cemetery at Mt. Tabor. The family will receive friends on Saturday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Melton Mortuary, and one hour prior to the services at the church on Sunday. A dinner will be served at the church following the burial. And now we must say good-bye to our beloved husband, son, father, grandfather and friend. He was our Gentle Giant.
