Joseph Sam "Joe" Cheek*, Jr. , - Class Of 1978

Joseph Sam "Joe" Cheek, Jr., 44, of Crab Orchard, passed away Saturday, Sept. 20, 2003, in a local hospital following a long illness. Born Sept. 13, 1959, in Charleston, he was the son of Joseph "Sam" and Partricia Whitehead Cheek of Crab Orchard. Joe was a 1978 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and served four years in the U.S. Air Force from 1978 to 1982. He was a computer technician for Spectrum Financial, Inc. in North Carolina. Joe's hobbies included motorcycling, listening to music and travel, visiting several countries overseas while in the USAF. Besides his parents, he is survived by his sister, Patricia Kathleen "Trish" Shaw and husband, Jason Phillip, of Huntington; a nephew and niece, Joseph Brady Shaw and Cynthia Jade Shaw of Huntington; aunts, Gaye Whithead of Daniels, Thelma Jean Burgess of Beckley, Francis Burgess of Glen Morgan, and Beatrice Lowery; and an uncle, George Whitehead and wife Sheila of Oak Hill. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Calfee Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Kenneth Parent officiating. Entombment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Chapel of Hope. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home and one hour prior to services Tuesday. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Arrangements by Calfee Funeral Home, Beckley.
