Lucy Ragland* (Bowers)

Lucy Hutter Ragland Bowers, born in Lynchburg, Va., on Aug. 29, 1904, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Monday, Sept. 26, 2005 at The Greystone Inn in Daniels. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Karl Douglas Bowers Sr. and their only son, Dr. Karl Douglas Bowers Jr. She is survived by three daughters and their families, Mrs. Robert G. (Sookie) Wilson of Glade Springs, Mrs. Richard K. (Nancy) Davis of Port St. Lucie, Fla., Mrs. Robert M. (Phyllis) Workman of Bedford, Va.; a daughter-in-law, Carol Sue Truman Bowers Baker of Destin, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; as well as two sisters-in-law, Mrs. George M. Ragland of Charleston and Mrs. Tom Ragland Jr. of St. Michael’s, Md.; and many nieces and nephews. A graduate of Beckley High School, Lucy attended Randolph- Macon Woman’s College for two years before transferring to West Virginia University. She graduated from the University in 1924 with an A.B. degree in romance languages then attended the University of Virginia to pursue graduate work. In 1926, Lucy married Karl Douglas Bowers and taught French for four years at Woodrow Wilson High School. She was a member of Chi Omega Sorority in college, past President of the Beckley Woman’s Club, Charter Member of the Raleigh County Girl Scout Council, past member of the Salvation Army Board, a Red Cross Volunteer for 25 years, a volunteer at Raleigh General Hospital for many years, member of the WVU College of Law Council, past recipient of the West Virginia University Order of Vandalia, and a member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. Service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 200 Virginia St., Beckley, with the Rev. Eric Miller officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley. Friends may call one hour before the services on Thursday at the church. Pallbearers will be Douglas Davis, Tyke Wilson, Dick Davis, Taylor Callahan, Terry Worley and Robert Workman Jr. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, Beckley Area Foundation, The West Virginia University Foundation, and Hospice of Southern West Virginia.
