Georgiana Powell* (Brown)

Georgiana Powell Brown, 89, of 108 Grant St., Beckley, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2004, at Raleigh General Hospital following a short illness. Born June 23, 1915, at Matoaka, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Eliza Powell. A 1936 graduate of West Virginia State College, she was a beloved high school history and government teacher at Stratton and Woodrow Wilson for 37 1/2 years. She was a lifetime member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., The Links Inc., Maids & Matrons and the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, among many other civic and social organizations. Georgiana was a devoted member of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Beckley where she was a longtime member of the choir and trustee board. Georgiana was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marion C. Brown, in 1969; a daughter, Marion L. Harris, in 1988; and two brothers, James and Booker Powell. Survivors include her granddaughter, Shana Suzanne Harris of Washington, D.C., formerly of Dayton, Ohio; brothers-in-law, Oscar W. Brown of Dayton and Carl J. Brown and wife, Thelma, of Washington; sisters-in-law, Thelma Brown Alford of Temple Hills, Md., and Ruth V. Brown of Annapolis, Md.; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. The family will receive friends 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at Ebenezer Baptist Church, 770 S. Fayette St., Beckley. Services will begin at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. David McDowell and the Rev. Robert Morton officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Park, Beckley. Arrangements by Ritchie and Johnson Funeral Parlor, Beckley.
