Miriam Byrd* (Brown)

WILMINGTON, N.C. - Miriam Byrd Brown, age 82, passed away on Saturday, May 27, 2006. She was born on Sept. 11, 1923, the daughter of the late Vaughan and Annie Wheeler Byrd. Remembered is her husband Ollie William Brown of Beckley, W.Va., who preceded her in death. Miriam was raised in Holly Springs, N.C., and was a graduate of Morris Harvey College in Charleston, WV. She was a caring and talented teacher, and taught at Woodrow Wilson High School in Beckley, later moving to Wilmington, where she taught English, Speech, Drama and Debate at New Hanover High School for many years until her retirement. She had been a member of Beckley Presbyterian Church, where she was remembered for her beautiful soprano voice. She is survived by her son, William Brown of Chicago, IL; two sisters, Jean Kerr, and Marian Wise both of Wilmington; a special brother-in-law, Horace Pierce of Beckley, W.Va., and many nieces and nephews. A time of visitation for family and friends will be 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel in Wilmington, N.C. A funeral ceremony will be 2 p.m. on Thursday, June 1, 2006, at Holly Springs Baptist Church in Holly Springs, NC. Burial will be in the Holly Springs Cemetery.
