Ruth Wray* (Gray)

Ruth Wray Gray, 86, formerly of Beckley, died Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002, after a short illness. Upon graduating from Duke University at age 19, she began a teaching career that spanned half a century. After posts at Beckley Junior High and Mount Hope, she spent 25 years at Woodrow Wilson and retired as head of math department in 1986. Mrs. Gray was a Sunday school teacher and choir member at First Christian Church in Beckley and later attended River Road Church, Baptist, in Richmond. She was the daughter of the late Everett B. Wray and Ruth Smith Wray, formerly of Glen White, and the widow of John W. Gray, also a teacher in Fayette and Raleigh counties and later head of county vocational rehabilitation. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas Peter and John Paul Wray. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, J. William Gray Jr. and Debrah Shumate Gray of Richmond; her grandchildren, John W. Gray III of Longmont, Colo., and Melanie A. Gray of Richmond; a brother, Dr. E.B. Wray of Beckley; and a sister, Julia W. Korman of Leesburg, Va. Service will be noon Saturday at Melton Mortuary Chapel, Beckley. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley. The family will receive visitors from 10 a.m. until time of service Saturday at the funeral home.
