Janice Ward* (Greene)

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Janice Ward Greene, 87, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008, at her home in Jacksonville following a long illness. Born Oct. 26, 1920, in Beckley, she was the daughter of the late Judge Columbus Morgan Ward and Grace Hawley Monroe Ward. She was of the Baptist faith. Mrs. Greene was educated in Beckley schools and was a 1938 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School. She attended Concord College for two years and was a graduate of the University of Kentucky in 1942 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. While at UK, she was a member of Kappa Delta sorority. Mrs. Greene taught at Beckley Junior High School four years. She and Charles Edward Greene were married Nov. 1, 1947, at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Beckley. They lived in Fairmont and Martinsburg before moving to Seattle, Wash., where they resided on Mercer Island, Wash., for many years. Mr. and Mrs. Greene were both avid golfers and were members of Bellevue Country Club and Overlake Golf and Country Club on Mercer Island. In addition to her parents Mrs. Greene was preceded in death by her husband; brothers, John Collins Ward and Dr. Charles Monroe Ward; and a sister, Helen Virginia Ward Leeber. Survivors include a nephew, Philip Ward Leeber and his wife, Vivian, of Jacksonville; two nieces, Judith Grace Leeber Ash of High Point, N.C., and Barbara Collins Ward Gardner and her husband, Dr. Robert T. Gardner, of Beckley; great-nephews, Philip Jason Leeber of Jacksonville, Robert Tennant Gardner II of Charlotte, N.C., and Charles Morris Ash of High Point; great-nieces, Shannon Dyan Leeber of Jacksonville, Janice Leigh Ash Walsh of Hickory, N.C., Jill Diane Ash of Greensboro, N.C., and Jennifer Collins Gardner Atkinson of Charlotte; and several great-great-nieces and nephews. There will be no visitation. Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Melton Mortuary, Beckley. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.
