Carl Edward Grooms*

Carl Edward Grooms, 57, of 503 Stanley St., Beckley, died Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2006, at Charleston Area Medical Center, General Hospital, following a short illness. Born Nov. 3, 1948, at East Bank, he was the son of Mildred Grooms of Chesapeake and the late James Williams. Mr. Grooms was a music teacher (band director), having retired in June 2004. He was member and president of the Raleigh County Music Education. He was a graduate of Cedar Grove High School and West Virginia Institute of Technology. He was a member of Cedar Grove Elizabeth Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Grooms, on May 19, 2005; and a cousin, Dewayne Grooms. Besides his mother, other survivors include two children, Carl E. Grooms Jr. of Beckley and Traci L. Jones of Beckley; a brother, Donald E. "Poochie" Grooms of London, W.Va.; a special aunt, Gertrude Dabbs of Cedar Grove; a special uncle, George Grooms of Chesapeake; a special aunt, Eva Mae Jackson of Newport News, Va.; special friend, Calvin Smith of Beckley; and a host of other relatives and friends. Service will be noon Saturday at Ritchie and Johnson Funeral Parlor, Beckley, with the Rev. Phillip Copney and the Rev. Dick Kinney officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley. Friends may call 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral parlor. Services entrusted to Ritchie and Johnson Funeral Parlor, Beckley.
