Emmette Jay Hurt*

Emmette Jay Hurt, 67, of Rural Acres Drive, (P. O. Box 1) Beckley, a well known Raleigh County educator, was found dead Tuesday, Jan. 29, 1991, at his home according to a Raleigh County Sheriff’s detective. Born February 21, at Rural Acres, he was the son of the late James Emmette and Edna Bailey Hurt. The Hurt family were pioneer settlers in Beckley. Mr. Hurt spent his entire life at Rural Acres, where he was a lifelong member of the Callaway Heights Community Church and was a 1941 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School. He enlisted in the U. S. Army in 1943, having served during World War II, was recipient of the World War II Victory Ribbon, Good Conduct medal, the Army Occupation medal (Germany), the American Theater Ribbon and the European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon. He furthered his education at Concord College with a A. B. Degree in education in the fields of biological, general and physical sciences and he held a Masters Degree in Administration from West Virginia University. Mr. Hurt began his teaching career in 1948 at Marsh Fork, moved to Eccles in 1949, where he stayed until 1954. That year he came to Beckley Junior High School. He served as principal at Clear Fork High School from 1962 until 1965, returning to Woodrow Wilson in 1967 where he was assistant principal until his retirement in 1985. He was well known for his tremendous rapport with the student body and he served many years as secretary of the Coalfield Conferences. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Waldo and Roland Hurt and two sisters, Anna Dean Duncan and Laverne McKinney. Survivors include a sister, Melba Hurt of Beckley, who raised him from the age of two: Five nieces and nephews. Jack McKinney of Bay City, Mich., Ed McKinney of Johnson City, Tenn.
