Millard Gillispie* (Jarrell)

Millard Gillispie Jarrell, 84, of Beckley, died Wednesday, November 6, 1991, in a Beckley hospital, following a short illness. Born August 2, 1907, at Oak Hill, he was the son of the late Charles Millard and Mary Margaret Gillispie Jarrell. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in chemistry in 1932, from New River State college, now West Virginia Institute of Technology. He completed two master’s degrees in school administration and guidance, one at West Virginia Institute of Technology and the other at West Virginia University in 1948. Mr. Jarrell taught at several local schools including Oak Hill High School from 1936 to 1941, and Woodrow Wilson High School from 1947 until his retirement in 1971. While at Woodrow, he also taught chemistry and mathematics at Beckley College from 1949 to 1958. He worked two years as an industrial chemist at EMCO alloy, before being inducted into U. S. Army medical Corps in 1942. Before his discharge in 1945, he served a year in the 1st Cavalry Division and two years as a rehabilitation counselor at Walter Reed General Hospital Reconditioning Center, Forest Glen, MD. After retirement from Woodrow Wilson high School, he taught chemistry five years at the Veterans Administration Hospital medical Technician’s School. Mr. Jarrell was a member of the United Methodist Temple, the Beckley Masonic Lodge No. 95 AF and AM, Beckley American legion Post No. 32 and the West Virginia Association of Retired School Employees. He was preceded in death by five brothers. Survivors include his wife, Betty Sanders Jarrell: a son, Charles “Chuck” and his wife, Kay Jarrell of Phoenix, Arizona, two sisters, Beatrice Trump of Oak Hill and Madelon Thompson of Bradley: and three grand children. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, prosperity, with the Revs, Frank Bourner and Tim Holloran officiating. Entombment will follow in the Highlawn memorial Park Mausoleum, Oak Hill. Friends may call from 6. p.m. to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Stanley Rose, Michael Walkup, Lee Cole, James Patton, J. S. Larrick, Joseph Williams and John C. Huffman.
