Alan Staton*

Alan Staton, 75, of Beckley died Oct. 24, 1999, in a Beckley hospital after a long illness. He was a band director with 35 years' service, having directed the Shady Spring High School band for 10 years and the Woodrow Wilson High School band in Beckley for 16 years. He gave private music lessons for over 40 years and was church choir director for over 30 years. He served as vice president of the West Virginia Band Masters Association and founded and conducted the New River Area Concert Band. He attended Memorial Baptist Church and was an ordained deacon and a member of Beckley Gideon Camp. Surviving: wife, Mary Alkire Staton; son, Curtis Staton of Beckley; daughters, Janet Keith of Greensville, S.C., Cheryl Boblett of Daniels, Rhonda Blevins of Hueytown, Ala., Debbie Markt of Aiken, S.C.; brother, Douglas H. Staton of Aiken; sisters, Molly Noyes of Tustin, Calif., Dora Cunningham of Pittsburgh, Marjorie Staton of Grafton; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren. Service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Prosperity, with the Rev. David Carrico officiating. Entombment will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Prosperity. Military graveside rites will be conducted by VFW Post 3110, Oak Hill. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
