Alma Ruth Woods*

Alma Ruth Woods, 88, of Beckley, died Tuesday, July 9, 2002, at her home following a long illness. Born Jan. 16, 1914, in Beckley, she was the daughter of the late Isaac E. McKinney and Bertha Lilly McKinney. Mrs. Woods was a retired employee of the Raleigh County Board of Education, having taught English at Woodrow Wilson High School. She received her master's degree from West Virginia University with special training at Duke University. She was a member of Memorial Baptist Church, Beckley. She was a former church organist at First Baptist Church, Beckley, and Beckley Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, James W. Woods; an infant brother; and a sister, Edith Heaberlin. Survivors include a son, the Rev. James Duke Burdette and wife, Glenna, of Parkersburg; a brother, Robert E. McKinney of Madisonville, Ky.; a sister, Dorothy Young of Beckley; seven grandsons, James D. Burdette Jr. and wife, Terah, Jeffrey A. Burdette and wife, Patty, Richard K. Burdette and wife, Terri, Steven C. Burdette and wife, Martha, John M. Burdette and wife, Marianne, Joshua D. Burdette and Greg Turley and wife, Andrea; four granddaughters, Patricia L. Stainback and husband, Gary, Susan D. McPhail and husband, George, Mary Beth Jordan and husband, Richard, and Jessica L. Burdette; and 12 great-grandchildren. Service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Susan Rector officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.
