Albert McCulloch Tieche* - Class Of 1971

ALBERT McCULLOCH TIECHE, JR.

Albert McCulloch Tieche, Jr. (Mac) of Beckley died on Sunday, January 3, 2021 from lung cancer.

Mac was born in Beckley on February 4, 1953, the eldest son of Albert McCulloch Tieche and Phoebe Bledsoe Tieche (Herring), both of whom preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Albert David Bledsoe Tieche. He is survived by his wife and love of his life, Melinda Gilmer Bland; sister Nancy Monroe Tieche, of Beckley; brother Albert Updyke Tieche II and his wife Jennifer (Hartsog) of Nashville, TN; niece Taylor Tieche of Nashville, TN; nephew Samuel Tieche of Charleston, SC; mother-in-law Betsy Gilmer of Beckley; Sydney and Coryn Gilmer of Georgetown KY; and several beloved pets.

Mac graduated from The Hill School in Pottstown, PA in 1971. He was a varsity athlete in both track and football, where he was part of the “Beckley Backfield”. He attended Cornell University after high school. He earned a bachelor's degree in Business Administration from West Virginia University and a master's degree in Healthcare Administration from The Ohio State University.

He worked as Administrator of Beckley Hospital for many years where he also sat on the board of directors. With family members and a friend, he founded Extend-a-Care, a successful home health care business. He was later General Manager of Black Knight Country Club, the course where, as a young man, he first acquired his life-long love for golf. He served on the board of directors of the Bank of Raleigh/Horizon Bancorp. He was a lifelong member and an Elder in Beckley Presbyterian Church where, in recent years, he played in the handbell choir and served on the Property Committee. He enjoyed volunteering at The Carpenter’s Corner in Beckley.

Mac was an avid golfer and he could often be found on the courses at Glade Springs. He also enjoyed traveling to play challenging courses in the U.S. and other countries, including The Old Course at St. Andrews in Scotland. He also enjoyed bowling in local leagues.

He was a faithful fan of the WVU Mountaineers and the Green Bay Packers, and a devotee of crossword puzzles. His friends knew him for his sense of humor and his fondness for a good steak and Heinz ketchup.

There will be a celebration of life scheduled in Beckley, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Mac’s name to: Beckley Presbyterian Church, Humane Society of Raleigh County, or The Beckley Area Foundation.
