Joined the Navy after highschool and was a Sonarman on a destroyer. We were in the blockade of Cuba during the missle crisis and it was our ship (our sonar crew) who picked up and tracked the Russian submarine, as depicted in the movie Thirteen Days. We forced it to surface and it surfaced right along side us. It was pretty exciting. I received a medal for that.

Went to CSM and then Fresno State, where I participated in all the anti-war demonstrations and sit-ins, and got a B.S. in Industrial Technology.

While visiting my brother who was living in Colorado, I met and fell in love with the woman I married in 1986 right after I moved to Colorado. We've been happily married ever since.

Worked at a number of different jobs until retiring on Jan. 1, 2010.

Along the way I played in softball leagues in Belmont, Burlingame, San Mateo and Menlo Park and then later in Colorado, and went to a whole lot of rock concerts.

School Story:

Okay, here's the story about how I flunked art class. I had done well in General Art and my father showed some of my work to one of his customers. He said that his company would give me a scholarship to a commercial art school in Berkeley if I agreed to work for their company after I graduated. So I took a Commercial Art class. We sat at tables that were laid end-to-end the length of the room facing the teacher. After he briefly explained he day's project we would do our work. At the other end of the room from where I sat was a girl with an amazing body. I would guess her cup size was a WW. Apparently she had a crush on the guy who sat next to me because instead of sitting at her table to do her drawing, she would walk down the inside of the tables and stand facing him. She wouldn't say a word but would stand there, bent over at the waist, and do her work. And she always wore something EXTREMELY low cut. I found this highly distracting. I think I would completely forget what the project was. This guy sitting next to me was a very good artist but he was color blind. He would ask me, "Could you hand me the blue?" And I would hand him the blue and then get back to my main job of looking down the front of this girl's blouse. I never completed a project and, of course, flunked the class, thus ending my career in commercial art. And he didn't seem to pay any attention to her and I don't think she ever got a date with him.

I didn't know Paul but I went to grade school with Barbara.  My heart goes out to her.  I can't even imagine the pain.
