Since 1988 sheesh!

Here's my bio:

Daniel E. Hickman, is an international facilitator of yogic experiences who shares his knowledge drawn from over 25 years of exploration in the movement/performing arts and over 15 years as a yogi-educator. He is the lead of The Silk Road Yoga Sangha and director of the Multidisciplinary Yoga Teacher Training (SRYS/MYTT). Currently, he is collaborating with the Defense and Veteran’s Center for Integrative Pain Management (DVCIPM) to implement a protocol of therapeutic yoga within the US military medical system.

Since the spring of 2007, he has worked in the Military Advanced Training Center (MATC) at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) in Bethesda, MD (formerly known as the WRAMC in Washington, D. C). It is here, in the occupational therapy ward, where he applies adaptive-yogic therapies to combat veteran amputees, their family & friends and all hospital staff. Since 2001, he has presented: specialized educational workshops and seminars focusing on the different dimensions of yoga; weekend & weeklong retreats; as well as facilitated training programs for numbers of organizations.

Over a ten year period in the Washington D. C. metropolitan area, he was employed as an artist-educator presenting interactive multicultural performances to audiences of children from the inner city & outer suburban neighborhoods. These included the various venues of the Barns of Wolf Trap, BAPA’s Imagination Stage, The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and The Smithsonian Institution’s Discovery Theater. He continues to work with persons spanning the age of 5 to 85 and always starts by meeting the individual exactly where they are. He reminds all that there is no ‘right’ way to do yoga, that there are numerous ways and the best way is to find their own way. Daniel’s hobbies include rock climbing, writing & having long lunches.

School Story:

Wow, look at that high school photo...

What do I remember about Walter Johnson...mmm?

Mr. Romero (Spanish teacher) for some reason would wave out the window, next to his desk, to his imaginary friends on the roof top as well as make "phone calls" to whoever from inside the classroom closet. Other times he would digress into a monologue about something that seemed very crucial (to him) ending up with his eyes misty and a classroom of confused students not having a clue about how any of it pertained to Spanish grammar. He had a big ol' belly and would wear sweater vests but out on the field he sported some strong legs with a swift stride for coaching soccer. Shout out to Uruguay!

Drinking many a mo-fo beers at house parties, in the parking lot, in anybody's car and then going to the school dances buzzin' like a champ, sauntering into the cafeteria grinnin' at the chaperons (thinking they didn't know what was up) and trottin' to the dance floor to get that groove on strong to that old school rap and R&B!

Just getting and giving rides from/to friends, seeing how many of us could pack into a vehicle and mellow cruising around. Something that simple I remember evoked a great sense of freedom, generosity and ease.

How diverse our school was - multi-cultural. mixed populations and what seemed to be a good amount of harmony and respect towards everyone's background and lineage.
