In Memory

Mr. James Connor

Chase and I went to "the office" quite a bit in 4th grade. Mr. Connor always seemed so tough- like having John Wayne as your principal. He rode a motorcycle to work. But underneath it, I think he was a really kind, fatherly figure.

I remember always having a positive relationship with Mr. Connor. I can say I was never sent to his office. I remember him being kind of scary on the outside because he seemed so big to an elementary schooler, but he was really a super nice and gentle soul.

It's funny how, at the time, we generally thought of Mr. Connor as some sort of frighteningly strict General Patton figure, only to remember him now as more of a kindly grandfather.

Probably the best data point for this schizoid characterization were the two wooden paddles (a la the frat initiation in "Animal House") that hung in his office. I think we now all readily recognize that those were meant solely as decoration, but of course at the time they were fodder for all sorts of preposterous legends about kids getting whupped.

As teachers, we all had a slightly different view of Jim Connor as our boss. Someday, you must ask Mr. Z or me to tell you some really funny stories about him! I always loved working for him, and, in fact, worked with him in two different schools because I liked him so much. He truly loved the kids in his charge.
