In Memory

Ivory Holifield - Class Of 1955

Ivory Hollifield, Jr. was born to Daisy (Teasley) and Ivory Hollifield Sr. in Lynch, Kentucky. His family relocated to Birmingham, Alabama when he was a young child. He was educated in the Birmingham public school district and graduated from Wenonah High School in 1955. It was in high school where he met the love of his life, Ellen (Jeter).

Hollifield, whom he wedded at the bedside of his sick mother and then whisked her away for a lifetime as a military spouse. Together, and throughout his Air Force career, he lived in several places abroad (Libya, Philippines and Greece) and in the United States (Alaska, Wyoming, California, North Dakota, Texas and Maryland). He was the proud father of three sons (Rodney, Michael and Pierre) and made a point of being involved in their daily activities despite the demanding schedule of working two jobs. He also volunteered as a devoted baseball coach for each of his sons and taught Sunday school. After seeing his sons graduate from college, he was motivated to continue his education and received his associates degree. Ivory retired from the US Air Force in 1984 and began a second career as a civil servant working at Naval Logistics base in Yermo, CA. In 2002, he and Ellen relocated to Las Vegas to be closer to family and grandchildren.
Ivory was an avid television fan who loved watching the Young and Restless, professional basketball and Judge Joe Brown. He was a news junkie who would report the news directly to family members making reading the paper or watching the news unnecessary for everyone else. Each week, he enjoyed spending time and sharing meals with his immediate and extended family. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
Ivory will be greatly missed. He was preceded in death by his mother (Daisy), Father (Ivory, Sr.) and Sister (Evelyn). He is survived by his wife of 63 years (Ellen), sons: Rodney (Charlene Day), Michael and Pierre (Monica Hollifield), granddaughters: Lauren (Damien Medrano), Carmen and Sarah, and a host of loving family and friends. His memory will live on for his family, friends and loved ones who celebrate his life and the man that he was. Per his wishes, Ivory will be cremated with memorial services to be held at Gidden Memorial on Saturday, April 2, 2022 at 2pm (visitation), 3 pm (service).
