Lillian Cannon (Armstead) - Class Of 1960

LILLIAN JOYCE CANNON ARMSTEAD, Class of 1960, 70, a longtime educator and lifelong resident of Jefferson County, died Sunday, October 7, 2012. In 1964 she married William "Naye" Armstead and the couple had three sons. The daughter of James and Mamie Cannon, she grew up in the Riley community and attended Riley Elementary and Wenonah High School. Inspired at an early age to become a teacher, she received her bachelor's degree in Education from Miles College, where she was also named Miss. Miles College in 1961. She went on to receive a master's degree in Education from UAB. In her thirty one years as an educator, Joyce taught at Spaulding, Eureka, Green Acres and Charles A. Brown Elementary Schools. She was a member of New Pilgrim Baptist Church where she was a deaconess and a member of the Education Fund. Viewing will be from 2:00 until 6:00 p.m. and family hour will be from 5:30 until 6:30 p.m., Friday at Smith & Gaston Southside. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 13 at 1:00 p.m. at New Pilgrim Baptist Church. Burial in Elmwood Cemetery. Lillian Joyce leaves to cherish her memory her loving husband, William, sons: Cortier (Ingrid), Waco, Texas, Girard (Assistou), Birmingham and Arhman of Birmingham. Sisters; Veraneice Wheeler, Sallie (Curtis) Sykes, Myrtle Grooms, Minnie (Terrace) Booker, Brenda (Charles) Hatcher all of Birmingham, brother; Pearlis Cannon of Birmingham, grandchildren; Mikaela, India, Asia, Jibril, and Sirarj.
