Sandra Elaine Banks Crawley was born in Birmingham, Alabama on April 15,1950 to Robert Pernary Banks and Susie Sykes Banks. Sandra was the third of five children. She was preceded in death by both of her parents, her brother, Leslie Tyrone Banks, and her sister, Carolyn Jean Banks Hardeman.
Sandra began a life of Christian service while attending Sunday School, church service and bible school at the Roosevelt Church of God. As a teenager, Sandra attended First Baptist Church of Roosevelt City, the church where her parents’ held membership. Her faith in God never wavered. Following a brief period of attendance, she accepted and acknowledged her love of Christ and was baptized.
With over 50 years of membership at First Baptist Church of Roosevelt City, Sandra demonstrated true commitment by participating in Sunday School, spearheading many youth activities, membership in the Church Adult Choir, and encouraging many children to join the youth choir. Sandra also served as a member of the Church matrons. To encourage others to participate in church activities, Sandra joined several members in annual recognition and gifting in honor of holidays such as Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and Black History Month. She was dedicated to service.
Sandra received her elementary and junior high education at Roosevelt Elementary School. She graduated from Wenonah High School with honors. She earned a Bachelor of Science from Miles College with honors, and a master’s degree from The University of Alabama in Library Science. She was consistently an honor student.
Sandra began employment with South Central Bell where she worked for approximately one year. She was employed as a library assistant at Miles College while pursuing graduate school. Her love of reading, learning, and her experience working at the Birmingham Public Library, all proved to be her lifelong passion. During her career with the Birmingham Public Library, she served in several managerial capacities. After 42 years, she retired as a Regional Director.
Sandra’s civic and service commitments include membership in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated where she was a founding member of the Gamma Pi chapter at Miles College where she was initiated October 24, 1970. She also pledged membership with Alpha Pi Chi Sorority. She was a respected member of both organizations earning the friendship and respect of many.
Memories of Sandra’s love, dedication and faithfulness will continue to warm the hearts of her son, Carl Christopher Crawley (Andres), brother, Robert E. Banks Sr. (Jean), sister, Beverly Joyce Banks Hinton, grandsons, Xavier Dale and Carter Crawley, granddaughter, Cristen Crawley and many relatives and friends.
