BIRMiNGHAM, Alabama -- A Birmingham man, who had been pulled from a burning car Saturday, died early this morning at UAB Hospital, the Jefferson County Coroner's Office reports.

David Jerome Desmond, 56, died at 2:12 a.m. today at UAB Hospital's trauma and burn intensive care unit, said deputy Jefferson County Coroner Bill Yates.

A bystander just before 4 p.m. Saturday called to report a person trapped in a car that was on fire at 633 Tuscaloosa Ave., Yates said. Birmingham Fire and Rescue responded and firefighters pulled the man out of the car, he said.

Desmond suffered burns to his face and hands, Yates said.

Birmingham Fire Battalion Chief C.W. Mardis said that after firefighters arrived they brought the fire under control in two or three minutes before they found the man and pulled him from the car. The car had tinted windows and was filled with smoke, he said.

Details of how the fire started were not immediately available, authorities said.   Bham News Article
