Got a B.A., M.A. at U of M ... then a career in journalism as a feature writer at the Detroit News and Miami Herald, then back to the News as editor of the Accent section and leader of the newsroom investigative team ... After Gannett bought us in '86, I transferred to company HQ in Northern Virginia and ascended to business editor/sports editor of Gannett News Service before taking a buyout at the end of 2001 ... highlight: leading a team of eight reporters at the Sydney Olympics ... now I run a public issues discussion/media analysis website, the "blook" in the title meaning a cross between a blog and a book ... an online book I'm writing on the site about the future of journalism (if there is one) has gotten more than 100,000 hits ... otherwise, I'm leading the beachy/swimming pool/hammock style life down in Naples with Harriet, my partner for 30 years now ...

While writing for the News, I went back to Seaholm for a 10-years-after story, sitting in on a couple classes and talking to students and teachers. I was shocked at the changes in even that amount of time ... it was as if the students had taken over the place ... I remember them giving the principal the brushoff in the hallway ... I haven't been back since then ...
