In Memory

Sharon Kay Matherly (Knight)

Sharon Kay Matherly (Knight)

Our loss of Sharon leaves a large hole in the reunion committee. She was dedicated to our class and a hard worker. Sharon taught piano and was the choir director of the Blacksburg Christian Church. She had been at Heritage Hall rehab center for an extended time and was going home when she fell and broke her hip while going out the door. Complications arose  that she could not recover from.

Sharon lost her husband and mother in the last year and was being cared for while in the rehab center by her nephew Mike Tilley.

I am very sad to hear of Sharon's passing.  Sharon was such a character!  Somewhere out there, members of an alumni group, who posed for a photo at a Virginia Tech Homecoming football game in the late 1980s, are still trying to identify the two mystery women in the photo (Sharon and me).  Sharon saw the group gathering for the photo and the next thing I knew I had been pulled into the group.

Sharon's aunt and uncle lived across the street from my parents, so we first met when we were very young.  We worked together at Virginia Tech in the early 1980s, and Sharon introduced me to her boyfriend's roommate.  We hit it off and were married in 1987.

I am so glad that Sharon was able to realize her dream of creating an art and music school for children.

Rest in Peace, old friend.
