Allen.

I just found out today, Sunday the 23rd, February 2014. Sorry to hear.

What happened? Last night I was just discussing the passing of some high school classmates to my children, ages 12 and 7. They thought there were quite a few.

With time, all of us must face this phase. Part of life.

My mother, who lives on East Arden Drive (a neighborhood close to Allen's place, I think) since 1987, has been dealing with serious cancerous tumors for the last 15 plus months. She is 73 and wants to make it to 85. I wish we all could. Thanks for any prayers her way.

I remember Allen from Binford Middle School in 6th and 7th grade. I think he may have played the bass. Or cello. But the instrument seemed big, according to my recollection. I think we went through Bachelor and Bloomington South the next five years together.

I played clarinet in band with Mr. Zorn at Binford, but poor Allen had...the orchestra guy that I almost remember the name of but can still picture. A loping figure, anyway. Zorn seemed pretty cool in comparison. My older sister Jenny, BHSS class of '87, had cello with him. The strings players were fewer and farther between.

Allen and I were not close, or there is nothing in particular that I remember about him in clear detail. That is good, compared to other dudes that I do remember for negative reasons, as well as the positive. I have a few tales to tell in that regard, but not with Allen. Which to me signifies he was a decent fellow, at least with me.

I do remember his smile. It was big and bright.

I remember that in high school he seemed to be struggling, perhaps academically, which might describe part of my four years at South. Especially once I was thrust in Geometry and Algebra with Kinzer and Girdley. Talk about fire and ice.

But this is about Allen. I pray that your family is okay and I hope that his memory lives on with many.

And like I said, I have no specific memories of Allen over the years I knew him, which were many, but generally I recall him as a good person and I think I am probably a better person by having known him.

My condolences for your loss.

[I look forward to any more news about the circumstances of Allen's life and family.]

[Thanks to the creators and maintainers of this site for keeping us abreast of the class '89.]

What happened to Allen?  I had no idea he had passed away.  I remember him sitting behind me in English class (Mrs. Ryser? - the teacher who always wore the blue eye shadow).  Allen could chew a whole pack of Hubba Bubba bubble gum at once.  It drove me crazy to hear him chewing away behind me, but he was always a fun-loving and good guy.  I'm so sorry to his family for his loss.

This weekend I was able to attend part of our 25th reunion; Nate Richardson spoke of Allen's untimely death. They were close friends. Again, I am sorry for this too early loss of a dear friend to some of our class and fellow classmate. On a positive note, it was nice to catch up with some old 89ers after a quarter century. Hope to see you again sooner than later. Ed

Based on all the BHSS '89 classmates that have not entered themselves here in our forum, I feel like there may have been a few more of us that have passed by the end of 2014. That is sad but true. I am now about midway through the forties as are the rest of us, and I feel time advancing. My mom passed away this year at age 73 and mortality seems so much more present than ever. Nevertheless, life is good.

I pray and hope that all our classmates are okay with their families now and into the long future. May most of us make it to 100 or beyond! My stepmother Janice graduated from South around 1956 and her Bloomington class still gets together in big numbers despite their ages, circumstances and dwindling numbers of those living.

Our generation seems to suffer from a few factors that keep us apart: apathy, job diffusion, and perhaps a few other things...Being busy with our own families, lifestyles, occupations. I have spoken with two old Binford/Batchelor/South friends that have gone far from Indiana, ranging from 3 to 6 thousand miles away, places like Alaska and eastern Europe. I think that they both do not appear listed in our roles. Anyway, I hope that many of us will be living and possibly return to Bloomington in the future; maybe a thirty year in 2019 or after that. Some at the 2014 reunion said over a hundred showed for the 20th. Who knows?

Again, it was good getting together last June and talking to Nate and others of '89, who filled me in with some more details regarding Allen Stewart. Rest in peace, brother.

PS: I think Allen's strings/orchestra teacher's name at Binford was also Stewart. Or am I confused with the science teacher I had, probably 6th and 7th, the old and stern Mr. Stuart, aka Stuey Manuey? I remember when he grabbed Brent Burns and scared him bad. Brent was trying to be funny with a guest college student doing surveys. Good ole memories.
