Doug Brekke

Brekke, Douglas Wayne passed away on August 17th at 77. He lived with asbestosis lung disease and heart disease for over 20 years. Doug was born on August 5, 1945, to Warren and Eleanor Brekke in Erdahl, Minnesota. His family moved to Bloomington, Minnesota at the start of his 9th-grade year in 1958. After high school, he studied as a draftsman and pipefitter at Dunwoody. He then enlisted in the Army Reserves in September 1966-August 1971 where he was a combat engineer. He had a passion for his trade and the brotherhood he felt in his union, Local 539, where he remained connected into retirement in 2005. If you didn't know that, you hadn't met him. A committed union man, Doug believed that people should be treated fairly and equitably. He was fiercely loyal to those he loved and the things he believed and he'd let you know about both.He was a proud and loving husband to Carole Ann and was especially attentive as she struggled with her illness. More than anything he loved to spend time with his children and grandchildren and most recently his first great-grandchild. He is survived by his devoted children Aaron (Chelley) Brekke and Sarah (Bob) Lee-Ertl, his adoring granddaughters Sophie, Madeline, and Cecelia, precious great-grandson, Liam Douglas, his sister Bonnie, and many nieces, and nephews. Doug is preceded in death by his wife, Carole Ann, parents, brother, and many close friends. His presence and devotion to his family and friends will be greatly missed.
