CANAL FULTON – Curt Shepherd, 44, passed away tragically on May 22. 

He was born Aug. 16, 1962 in Barberton. 

Curt was a 1981 graduate of Boardman High School. He was the owner/operator of the Little Caesar’s franchise, and trustee for the Portage Lakes Eagles. He was a member of Saints Phillip and James Catholic Church. He was a devoted husband and father, and an avid boater, pilot, hunter and deep sea fisherman. 

He is survived by his loving wife and high school sweetheart of 25 years, Elena DeGregory; a son, Curtis, and daughter, Stephanie, both of Canal Fulton; his father, Curtis Shepherd of Barberton; his mother, Judy Lewellen of Melbourne, Fla.; a brother, Kevin (Shirley) Shepherd of Omaha, Neb.; an uncle, David P. Schroeter Sr. of Melbourne; an aunt, Joan (Mario) Ferre of Palm Bay, Fla.; his father-in-law, James R. DeGregory of Chiefland, Fla.; his brothers-in-law, James C. (Meghan) DeGregory of Girard and Phillip DeGregory of Huntington Beach, Calif.; a sister-in-law, Cheryl DeGregory of Girard; and many nieces, nephews, other loving family and friends. 

He was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Shirley DeGregory of Boardman.

There will be a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 30, at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 4940 W. Tuscarawas St., Canton, Ohio 44708 with Father Robert W. Kaylor officiating. Everyone is asked to meet at the church for the Mass. 

Calling hours will be Tuesday from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Schermesser Funeral Home, 600 E. Turkeyfoot Lake Road (Route 619).

I met Curt as a Freshman in art class.  I was a transfer from California.  Curt was freshman quarterback and had a big heart.  He was compassionate and spoke up for others who hadn't yet grown into their skin enough to speak up for themselves.  Wish I had the opportunity to get to know him better.
