In Memory

Barbara Marta (Marta)

Barbara J. Marta died from complications of Multiple myeloma Cancer and Ovid, (sic) December 14, 2021. Remembrances can be sent to the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society, (blood Cancer research). She was born in Chicago to Leona and Walter Voelker. She was not only beautiful, but smart, earning a BA and a MA in English Literature. She was a brilliant teacher for thirty years. Even students from 40 years ago still kept in touch with her...continually. She was everyone's "teacher of the year"! Even after retiring she raised thousands of dollars for the blood Cancer research for the Leukemia/Lymphoma Sailing Cup, sponsored by Seattle Yacht Club, in which she was a life member. She loved sailing, and also loved the SYC Drama group. When Barbara entered the room, all the lights went to full bright! She was a great traveling companion, starting with being there when the Berlin Wall went up in 1961 and visits to more than 25 other international locations. Scholarship, travel,, marriage and motherhood all were perfect in her lifetime. We will all miss her much more than she will know. She is survived by her son, J. Matthew (of Scottsdale), her husband, Dr. James (Mercer Island) and a sister, JoAnn (of Spokane). I hope we will all meet together again
