In Memory

Shaun McGarvey

Shaun McGarvey died at age 34 of Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma.

"Shaun and I were inseparable during high school. Many good times spent together. Discovered much great music together over the years and watching Shaun excel at the guitar in the process. His innate intelligence was amazing. I figured by hanging out with him maybe some of that would rub off on me. Didn't happen. I do believe many Seniors would not have passed Physics if he had a later period class. After I finished college, we drove out to the west coast together in an old Dodge pickup. A trip fraught with much fun and interspersed with long stretches of boredom. Nebraska and Eastern Colorado being one of those stretches. Once we hit the Rockies righteousness was most definitely achieved! Shaun went to St Mary's College in Southern Maryland on a full academic scholarship. He was very close to getting a double degree in Philosophy and Physics. After deciding that wasn't where his interests would lie he eventually transfered to UMCP and graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering. He went on to work for the EPA where he remained until his untimely death. Shaun battled alcoholism in his 20's. As he got his life back together he discovered ballroom dancing and the wonders of South American women. Unfortunately cancer cut in and ended that and many of his other pursuits. Great memories are of his band playing at parties in the basement of the group house where I used to live. Too many inside jokes I shared with him are now lost forever."
