Joseph A. Bompczyk, pioneering punk guitarist

June 8, 1954—Sept. 6, 2010

Joe Bompczyk, whose buzz-saw guitar led the attack of the pioneering Buffalo punk band the Enemies, died Monday in the Center for Hospice& Palliative Care, Cheektowaga, after a brief illness. He was 56.

A major influence on younger players, he returned to the spotlight in local clubs after a lengthy hiatus about 10 years ago, playing in Enemies reunions and with his most recent group, the Dead Cowboys, with his wife, Nancy, on vocals.

“Disconnected,” a song he wrote with the Enemies, was performed by the Goo Goo Dolls on their breakthrough 1995 album, “A Boy Named Goo.”

Born in Buffalo, he was a graduate of Riverside High School and attended Erie Community College City Campus.

Mr. Bompczyk began playing guitar during grammar school and played in several neighborhood bands before putting an ad in the newspaper to form a group that became the Enemies. The Enemies released an album and were mainstays of the punk scene at McVan’s and elsewhere in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

When the Enemies disbanded, he became part of the Restless, a group of leading players from the punk scene. The group recorded an album with legendary producer Eddie Kramer and filmed a music video but did not achieve success outside Buffalo.

After the Restless broke up in 1984, Mr. Bompczyk stopped performing and worked for many years in a trucking company office. He continued to write songs and before his death was finishing a CD of his own material, which is expected to be released posthumously.

Surviving are his wife, the former Nancy Payne; a son, David;a daughter, Teresa; and his parents, Daniel and Caroline.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a. m. today in St. Andrew Catholic Church, 1525 Sheridan Drive, Town of Tonawanda.
