William M. 'Mac' McCandless
William M. "Mac" McCandless, 65, of Butler passed away at 9 a.m. Monday at Butler Memorial Hospital. 
He was born Nov. 24, 1946, in Butler, the son of the late Kenneth Harry McCandless and the late Elizabeth (Protch) McCandless. 
William was a member of St. John's Reformed Church. He retired from Armco, now AK Steel, after 34 years. He played trumpet in the Butler Symphony and enjoyed collecting model trains. He also was a member of American Legion 778 and the Lyndora Slovak Club and was a union representative of BAEU. 
Surviving are his wife, Martha "Marti" (Youngblood) McCandless, who he married Dec. 28, 1998; a daughter, Beth Ann McCandless of Prospect; a son, Kenneth (Diane) McCandless of Prospect; a stepson, Wes Miller of Slippery Rock; three grandchildren, Rebecca McCandless, Kristen Staugh and Christopher Miller; and a brother, Robert (Lisa) McCandless of Butler.
MCCANDLESS - Friends of William M. "Mac" McCandless, who passed away Monday, March 5, 2012, will be received at Young Funeral Home, 127 W. Jefferson St., Butler, from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday. 
Services will be at the funeral home at 11 a.m. Friday with the Rev. Dr. Robert Peterson officiating. Interment will be in Butler County Memorial Park, Butler.

It doesn't say he graduated from BHS, but it is his name and born in 1946. Maybe someone can confirm that this is correct.  Milann

Yes Bill was a '64 graduate. He and I became friends in Jr High as we both had a love for music and we  played in the orchestra. In high school we played in the band,orchestra and brass ensemble and our friendship continued until his passing.

James W. "Oppenheimer"

I can still remember Bill and some other trumpet players playing along to records of trumpet virtuosi such as Rafael Mendez. My father, who had played trumpet professionally, was quite impressed with Bill's playing.

Yes. Bill did graduate from BHS in 1964. We knew each other since Junior High via band and orchestra.  Through HS we attended a number of regional (and other) band/musical festivals. He was a remarkable and unique trumpet player and musician, at times choosing to deviate from the score instead of playing "as written." He was just as comfortalbe playing Gershwin or Copeland as he was playing more contemporary tunes.
