Alvin Webber was an incredibly talented young man when I knew him in High School. He was an artist who could draw beautifully, and he was also an amazingly brilliant thinker. We were good friends and I was very sad to hear of his early death. Rest in peace, Alvin.

James W. "Oppenheimer"

I cannot remember when I first got to know Al, but it seemed there was a group of us that would go to Tumble Inn and then go home and watch The Defenders, Seventy Seven Sunset Strip and whatever.

Al always had a very unique and insightful way of looking at anything, and I do mean anything, that he turned his attention to.  Al, Bill Hulton and I were together on the Skyliner, and I can recall the numerous events that transpired.  I think we had Mrs. Dumbaugh pulling her hair out at times.

Al and Bill Hulton and some other folks and I were in a small group of guys who marched to a different drummer, if you will.

One hears of people who are brilliant, but Al was The Real Deal.  His art was simply amazing, and his writing was always thought-provoking and insightful.

He had a battle with depression his entire life.  He the right things, was being treated at one of the best facilities with the best medication at the time, but he couldn't beat it.

I remember getting a call from my dad. He told me I'd better sit down, and then he told me Al had taken his life. After the call, I just had to sit by myself for a while.  They had a retrospective showing of his art work.  But he was going to do so much in the coming years.  It's a tragedy.

Now Bill Hulton has gone to join him, and I hope they are up there exchanging their off-the-wall jokes, maybe waiting for the rest of us to get there. It's been a while since we played tennis...
