Jacob and I grew up together on South Oregon street.   In elementary school, I told people he was my best friend.  Although we weren't as close in middle school or high school, you never really take away riding bikes, playing cops and robbers, basketball, or all the other things kids do.  His sisters were older and babysat for my family.

I hadn't talked to him in years, but in college my sister Christie told me he had passed away.  I haven't really had a family member pass away that I've been close to.  I can honestly say it was one of the hardest things to hear I've ever heard.  I still remember sitting there in the cafeteria, and everything kind of fades out, probably because you mind is fighting for justification that nothing really happened and everything is ok.
