Dean passed away on September 21, 1991. I asked Denise to include Dean with our class because he was supposed to graduate with us. When we first started dating, he had been left back twice and he spent two summers working his ass off in summer school to jump a grade ahead. But even with all of the hard work, he was still one year behind and it really bothered him that he did not graduate with us.

When he first joined us in high school in 9th grade he was rough around the edges, in trouble a lot and heading down what seemed to be the wrong path. But he turned his life around in the next couple of years and was like a totally different person by the time he graduated. I was very impressed by the changes in him and his desire to change at such a young age.

Dean died in a tragic situation and really was a victim of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. He has a son, Joseph, who is now 19 years old. At the time of his death, he was interested in becoming a police officer.

It's sad that his life was taken away at such a young age in such a stupid and unnecessary situation. I think of how much life we have all experienced in the past 17 years since he has been gone and it's unfair that he did not get his fair share.

We were young, we were in love and the break up may have been unpleasant. But some of my best high school memories have to do with the time we spent together and I am thankful for that.
