John Edwin Davis

John Edwin Davis, 71, of York, SC, left us to be with his Savior, Jesus Christ, on December 26, 2023.
He was born in Charlotte, NC September 2, 1952, to Joyce and Thurston Davis.
John, a loving husband, father, and grandfather is survived by his former wife Fran Davis, and wife
Kristin; sons Quentin and Emerson; six grandchildren; his sisters Elizabeth Jackson and Mary Lou Piatt.
John was very passionate about football. When he played Pee Wee football, the coach nicknamed him Smasher. Which meant somebody was left on the ground after John ran through the defensive line. At Myers Park High School he played football, ran track, and wrestled. He graduated in 1970 and went to Elon College where he also played football, ran track, and wrestled. He graduated from Elon College in 1974 earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in History.
John was a Paint Contractor for 20 plus years in the Myers Park area.
John had the personality and natural charisma to make friends of anyone. He always lived life to the
fullest and loved to laugh.
John will be missed by many. His family and friends loved him dearly.

A Memorial Service will take place at 12 pm on January 7, 2024 at The Rock Hill Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 255 Neely Store Road, Rock Hill, SC 29730.

John, pound per pound, was the greatest athlete that I ever had and an opportunity to play football with (MPHS) . He had the heart of a lion. Number "40" will always be remembered and missed. He was a champion. May he Rest in Peace!🪦

I was saddened to hear of John's passing. We never shared uniforms but we did share a wonderful friendship for many years dating back to elementary school. John Davis is one of the reasons that we collectively enjoyed and celebrated a certain "Mustang Spirit" - a spirit that he enriched in many ways.......We will miss you, our friend......

John never talked much, but then again, he didn't have to.

He often had a wry smile that communicated to me that he knew more than he was letting on.

I simply returned his smile.

Gone, but not forgotten.

I remember a moment in history when I walked into Eckerds at Myers Park Center and John was sitting at the lunch counter. He called out to me. I was as "out" as anyone could be at AG, and he was definitely "in". I couldn't believe how nice he was to me. We never were in the same crowd, and I did not play sports, but I never forgot how kind he was to acknowledge me. I hope he rests in peace, kind man.

AG, 7th grade, and every guy there had dreams of being a football star.  After several weeks of practice under JV coach Jack Stanback, the starters were announced and we had our first game (can't remember who we played).

No one really knew how good we would be when Coach called "fullback left" on the first offensive play from scrimmage and Mark Fellers handed off to John.  Then, from the middle of the crowd of linemen, John burst into the defensive secondary and ran for a long touchdown.

I vaguely remember that he did the same thing two or three times that day, and a true star was born.  John was a unique athelete who excelled throughout his career at AG and Myers Park.

I think John's family would appreciate the stories and thoughts our classmates have posted and would like to share with them.
If anyone else would like to share a memory, between now and mid-day Friday Jan 5th, I can collate and get to his wife Friday afternoon. (before the Memorial Service on Sunday Jan 7th.)
Thank you! Katharine

I think Tim hit the nail on the head: "John ... had the heart of a lion. Number "40" will always be remembered and missed. He was a champion." I had the privilege of playing with John and remember the Ashbrook game, a key opponent. I just barely got in the way of my guy on the edge and "woosh" Davis was gone, setting up our key touchdown. Our success was due to him in large part and Charlotte recognized him, as he was named MVP of the League. One other memory of John; seeing him streak around the track in the Queen City Relays! John gave it his very best always and epitomized hard work and dedication. May God bless him and watch over him.

It was wonderful to see so many old friends at John's service. Chip and Andy both gave heartfelt rememberances of John and brought a few tears from some of us. I think each of us left being reminded of the incredible contribution John made to our lives

That really was a good turnout of Mustang classmates who attended the funeral service - some of whom I had not seen in many years. Chip and Andy both did a great job giving the "reflections / eulogies".
