Miss Whitley was an amazing teacher.  I learned so much in her Math Analysis class. She was no nonsense and was determined we were going to learn.  I never skipped doing my homework - because she actually checked to see if we did it!

She was my homeroom teacher and I had her for a math class. An extraordinary educator though I thought she would have been much older by now. I guess when we were 16 everyone looked old. And now here we are.

She was the very best Math teacher I had at MP. She was so calm and knowledgeable and she truly wanted us all to understand the Math she taught. She was so helpful and encouraging in a quiet way. She was special as a Math teacher and a wonderful person!

Miss Whitley's math analysis class was maybe one of my best classes at Myers Park. Miss Whitley not only made sure you did your homework, but made sure you understood the principles. She was a very skilled teacher. On a different note, I've never forgotten the scarfs she would wear. Conrad Bookout was in my class with her, and I remember one day Conrad, standing next to Miss Whitley, told her how good her scarf looked, but then suddenly reached out and rotated her scarf slightly while telling her it now looked even better. Everyone in the class burst out laughing and the usual seriousness of Miss Whitley collapsed as her eyes grew wide and she broke into a big smile. I'll never forget that day.

BTW, note that the obituary posted here is 14 years old.

As others expressed, Ms. Whitley was an outstanding math teacher.  She commanded respect simply by her presence.  If there was a noise in the room, other teachers would talk louder to regain control.  Ms. Whitley spoke more quietly , and instantly all noise ceased so we could hear.  We were fortunate to have had her for a teacher.

Miss Whitley was an amazing teacher.  She taught me Algebra-Trigonometry so well that the Math Placement exam at Chapel Hill tried to place me out of two semesters of Calculus (even though I had never taken Calculus).  She was truly called to teach.

She was always prepared and organized to the nth degree. I never appreciated this quality until I myself began teaching science as a Professor at a University. There is no backup; there is no substitute.
