CLASS OF 1980 REUNION RECAP

Friday, July 30

TOUR

I waited in the school parking lot, wondering if anyone, besides Larry, would show up for the tour.  As 4:00 rolled around, everyone seemed to arrive at once.
First was Larry, with Nigel tagging along, then Jim Popchock in his truck. A motorcycle followed close behind, carrying Bob Nichols, all dirty and sunburned from the long road trip up from L.A., where he had purchased the motorcycle on E-Bay a few days earlier.  Then Kelly Wick-Agan pulled up.  Mo Noder showed up along with his wife Evie.  Allan Gainer, Craig Delbridge and Brent Reynolds also came for the tour.
We were all baffled when Brent showed up.  Baffled, because none of us recognized him.  I believe, most of us, would have voted him ‘toughest to recognize’.
Bringing up the rear was Bill Barr, he being a total surprise to me, because I had never found him.  He was very happy to see us all and said that he had just called the high school a week or so earlier.  Luckily, someone at the school, was able to let him know when the reunion was being held.
As we wandered the school, we marveled at how different it was and wondered how the students could possibly use such thin lockers (they are only about 6 inches wide).  It still has many features that are familiar, the old gym and the little theater to name a few.  The library is in the same area as before, but is a lot smaller, on account of everything being on computers these days.  The cafeteria is in the same spot and in one corner, up on the wall is the framed collection of our senior portraits.
After the tour, we all went down to Eagles Pub to start the evening.

ICEBREAKER

We were not the only reunion that night; the Cheney class of 1990 was there kicking off their festivities, for the weekend, also.  Luckily the pub was big enough for both groups and they did a great business that night.
We had 44 classmates and with their guest, a total of 56 attended the pub for the icebreaker.  Ten classmates attended the icebreaker only, but we were all happy that they could attend a least one of the two nights.
Between the crowd and the music, it was a bit loud in the pub.  We all came out a little on the hoarse side.  I believe everyone had a good time.  One classmate, having way too much fun, got 86’d late in the evening.

GOLFING

Larry Robinette

First thing, I was trying to deal with this hangover from classmates being so generous and buying beer and drinks for me at the meet and greet at the PUB.  The next thing I had to deal with was my alarm not going off since I set it for the weekdays and not for the weekend (isn’t technology grand?).  A shower and Nigel knocking on the door motivated me to get going as it was 7:20 am and we were to be there at 7:30.  We arrived at 7:47, hauled the clubs, paid for the cart and went to meet the other classmates who showed up.  There was Mark Anderson, Larry Hardie, Kevin Davis (Michelle Lloyd’s husband), Rob Pottorff (a friend of Mark’s), Kevin Goodner, Mitch Courtright, Gary Hagel, Nigel Geary, and me.  Nigel and Gary just were along for the ride.  Nigel and I joined the group just as they were finishing the first hole.  It rained really hard as I joined Mitch and Kevin on the second hole.  I had to give the first group of Mark, Larry, Kevin, and Mark’s friend a razzing about how they were golfing.  There was a great deal of catching up done between all of us on the course.  When we got to the second par 3 it was for the closest to the pin.   Mark Anderson had set it up where we could win.  A dozen golf balls would go to whoever got their ball closest to the pin.  We all took turns; it was a little nerve wracking as there was a small crowd of us.  I don’t remember the order but I know that Kevin G’s ball went a little wide right, mine went fine but left, Mark’s went deep, Mitch was in a good line but short, and Larry H’s was the one closest to the pin. Nigel played a hole and decided his game was too rusty so he went back to watching.  We played the front nine and stopped to get some food (for I had to settle my stomach and headache by getting some food).  Nigel and Gary stayed back and said they would participate by drinking beer so we wouldn’t have to.  The back nine was fun, first thing we did on the 11th hole (Kevin, Mitch, and I) was to find out that we were on the wrong side of the hole and weren’t following the right course for the golf carts.  We did correct this however.  We spent quite a few minutes looking for our golf balls as they seemed not to go where they were suppose to (which was the middle of the fairway).  We came to the longest drive hole and we found this out by Mark saying that no one in his group had hit the ball in the fairway so any of us who hit our ball in the fairway would win the prize.  (I later found out they each took two tries at it).  I won the longest drive and another dozen golf balls by hitting the fair way (Kevin hit the longest ball but it was wide of the fairway).  After a very frustrating last hole for our group (I think 8 was the average) we sat comfortably outside under the tent and had a few pitchers of beers, hot wings, and some other appetizers. In all, it was a great day for golf, catching up with friends, and making new friends.  I can’t wait to do it again.

MAIN EVENT

Saturday evening, we all came together in the upstairs banquet room at the Willow Spring.  We enjoyed Mike Hartman’s offerings, which was a simple but satisfying selection of food and drink.  The use of his restaurant, at no charge, was a big help.  The chance to see each other and to catch up after all these years was the real reason for being there.  After eating, we drew for a few door prizes.  Then we descended the stairs for the group photo in front of the restaurant. ( The photos can be viewed and ordered at spokaneimage.printroom.com; password is cheney80) We then adjourned to the bar area to finish drawing for the remaining door prizes.  We continued to socialize, reminisce and have fun.
Saturday’s attendance was 43 classmates.  A total of 62, including guests, enjoyed the festivities.  Ten classmates attended only the event at Willow.  We wished more could have joined us, but there’s always next time
If you are unable to attend, we are hoping to have some computers available to use and chat with classmates at the reunion in a virtual sort of way.

THANKS

Larry and I would like to give a special thanks to the following people:
Mark Anderson for setting up the golf, creating the post cards, and printing them.
Mitch Courtright for all his work in creating the Cheney class of 1980 website.
Allan Gainer for setting up the tour at the high school and for providing the music, sound system, and trivia on both nights.
Mike Hartman for all the work he did in preparation for the reunion festivities.
Mark St.Marie for putting up with his wife in reunionland for the last 4 months.
We would also like to thank all the classmates who donated to the class for the purchase of door prizes, but most importantly we would like to thank all the classmates that made the effort to attend the Cheney class of 1980, 30 year reunion.
It would not have been a success without your attendance.
~ Thank You, Tina Gillingham (St. Marie)
P.S.   Thank you, Larry, for all you did.  I couldn’t have done it without your help.  Having someone like you, to help make the necessary decisions, made all the differences in the world.  Tina

PPS.  Thank you so much Tina without your attention to detail and doing all the leg work with the proper prompting our reunion wouldn't have been anything without you.  Thanks so much from me.

LR
